This is a thought that comes to mind when first witnessing the water behavior on a surface coated with Gtechniq’s EXO Ultra Durable Hybrid Coating version 2 (EXOv2). I have always been enamored with the original version of EXO. The amount of crystal like gloss it gave to a surface and its ability to keep a car cleaner for much longer than usual. When I found out that Gtechniq was developing and upgraded version, I could not wait to get some and try it out.
The original EXO came in an aerosol can. The application process was simple enough: perfect the surface, chemically strip the surface with Gtechniq Panel Wipe, use one microfiber to apply a thin layer of product and a second to remove excess product, then apply a second layer 30 minutes later. However, EXO required that the surface temperature of each body panel to be at least 68 degrees. This proved difficult in colder climates or on cold winter days. EXOv2 does away with this requirement.

EXO v2 is also no longer an aerosol and while I was skeptical at first, it allowed for an easier application. Using a high quality foam applicator only a few drops can cover large areas and even whole panels. The first coat went on in under 20 minutes and the second much faster than that. The amount of product used in application was also miniscule compared to other coatings like Gtechniq’s own C1 or 22ple VX1 Pro. Here is a picture comparing 1 coat of C1 vs. 2 coats of EXOv2 used on this particular car. (EXO on the left with the silver cap)
EXOv2 has a slew of improvements including more slickness, increased chemical resistance and greater hydrophobic properties. The water contact angle has been bumped from 110 degrees to 115. With most waxes, sealants or coatings water appears to simply slide off the surface, whereas with EXOv2 the water appears to be sprinting in fear from the surface. As if EXOv2 has issued a death threat to any water it comes in contact with. In fact, capturing some of the pictures and video clips seen here proved to be quite difficult. Keeping a healthy enough amount of water in one location for filming or photographing took a bit of finesse. Combine all of this with the fact that the production version will have even more hydrophobicity and you have a product that looks like a gun in a knife fight.
