This is a thought that comes to mind when first witnessing the water behavior on a surface coated with Gtechniq’s EXO Ultra Durable Hybrid Coating version 2 (EXOv2). I have always been enamored with the original version of EXO. The amount of crystal like gloss it gave to a surface and its ability to keep a car cleaner for much longer than usual. When I found out that Gtechniq was developing and upgraded version, I could not wait to get some and try it out.
The original EXO came in an aerosol can. The application process was simple enough: perfect the surface, chemically strip the surface with Gtechniq Panel Wipe, use one microfiber to apply a thin layer of product and a second to remove excess product, then apply a second layer 30 minutes later. However, EXO required that the surface temperature of each body panel to be at least 68 degrees. This proved difficult in colder climates or on cold winter days. EXOv2 does away with this requirement.
Gtechniq EXO v2 New Look
EXO v2 is also no longer an aerosol and while I was skeptical at first, it allowed for an easier application. Using a high quality foam applicator only a few drops can cover large areas and even whole panels. The first coat went on in under 20 minutes and the second much faster than that. The amount of product used in application was also miniscule compared to other coatings like Gtechniq’s own C1 or 22ple VX1 Pro. Here is a picture comparing 1 coat of C1 vs. 2 coats of EXOv2 used on this particular car. (EXO on the left with the silver cap)
EXOv2 has a slew of improvements including more slickness, increased chemical resistance and greater hydrophobic properties. The water contact angle has been bumped from 110 degrees to 115. With most waxes, sealants or coatings water appears to simply slide off the surface, whereas with EXOv2 the water appears to be sprinting in fear from the surface. As if EXOv2 has issued a death threat to any water it comes in contact with. In fact, capturing some of the pictures and video clips seen here proved to be quite difficult. Keeping a healthy enough amount of water in one location for filming or photographing took a bit of finesse. Combine all of this with the fact that the production version will have even more hydrophobicity and you have a product that looks like a gun in a knife fight.

After the Gtechniq C3 Smart Carnauba review, I decided to start a series of Gtechniq product reviews. So, the most logical place to start would be at the bottom of the coating line. Gtechniq C1.5 Silo (“see-low”) Seal is a versatile product that can coat nearly any surface with a layerable quartz based sealant. At first, I did not think much of Silo Seal. Gtechniq included it with the C1 coating as a sort of maintenance product. I figured I didn’t need it because I was using EXO on top of C1. However, Silo Seal is now getting a great detail of use away from C1 & EXO. With a durability of up to 6 months, it has become essential in my protection arsenal.

Have you ever used a new product and performed a double take… and then a triple take? A product that produced instant results that you just couldn’t believe? Gtechniq C3 is one of those products. When I first used Gtechniq C3 Smart Carnauba, I thought I had done something wrong. After a simple wipe on, wipe off I was seeing gloss beyond belief. Despite being discontinued by Gtechniq, this is still one of my favorite products. A few places may still have a small stock, so buy up what you can while you can!!
Not only does it produce some of the best gloss I have seen from any wax it also has a lot of other uses most waxes could never dream of. Gtechniq claims that Smart Carnauba will work on ‘dry, wet, cool & hot surfaces.’ Among these different surfaces are ‘bodywork, glass, trim, wheels, tires and interiors.’ Durability is another part of this product that is truly exceptional. On my personal truck I have seen durability exceed 3 months which is truly unheard of for almost any carnauba wax. Gtechniq C3 can also keep a vehicle cleaner longer than any other wax I know of. Even with living on an 1/8th mile gravel driveway, my truck will still look clean two to three weeks after a wash. Gtechniq even claimed that a detailing facility in Japan has switched from a very expensive wax to Gtechniq C3 due to its glossier appearance and ability to keep cars cleaner longer.
Don’t think that the benefits just stop with surface protection and appearance, Gtechniq C3 Read more…
Blackfire Wet Diamond – All Finish Paint Protection is used by many professional detailers, and is regarded as one of the top synthetic sealants on the market today. When it comes to ease of use, durability, slickness of paint and a deep wet gloss, it is tough to beat Wet Diamond. One of the unique characteristics of this sealant is that it is boosted by Polycharger technology. This extends the durability of the Wet Diamond protection up to 6 months and increases slickness and shine. With how easy this product is to apply and remove an ounce or two is all that is needed to protect an entire mid-sized vehicle.
Blackfire Wet Diamond Sealant for Professional Detailers
One of the nicest characteristics of the Blackfire sealant is how easy it is to apply and remove. When it comes to adding your protective layers, one of the last things you want to happen is to struggle to apply or remove a product. After you have spent hours or days properly polishing and correcting the paint, you want to use a product that requires as little effort as possible. This helps minimize adding any swirls or marring to the finish. On lighter colored finishes, Blackfire Wet Diamond sealant is a terrific option as it produces a mirror like reflection. Also, customers absolutely love the slick finish it provides. Read more…
22ple VX1 Signature Glass Coating is a new type of product for me, a coating. Before using VX1, I’ve only protected vehicles using a sealant or wax. 22ple has formulated a high silica-content product that creates a layer of glass protection on the paints surface. To demonstrate the effectiveness to me, Todd Cooperider handed me a foam applicator pad, previously used to apply the 22ple VX1 product. To my surprise, the foam pad felt stiff in my hand and you could understand how this product can potentially give you between 18 – 24 months of protection. I knew I had to get my hands on some and put it to the test.
VX1 comes boxed up in glass jars in either 20 ml, 30 ml or 50 ml sizes. Read more…
Optimum Car Wax is perhaps one of the most effective spray on wax options. When assessing a product to use for protection, we typically rate it on four levels, ease of application, durability, looks and value. Optimum has a winner with their spray on Car Wax formula. It could be argued that this is one of the easiest ways to wax your car. The product goes on easily, spreads thin and can be buffed to a streak free shine effortlessly. When it comes to shine, Optimum Car Wax leaves behind a nice warm glow and adds a nice layer of gloss in minutes. When it comes to durability, many people think spray on waxes will not hold up. Optimum Car Wax is designed to be more durable than other liquid wax options, lasting anywhere from 6 weeks to 3 months (depending on what environmental conditions the vehicle is exposed to). When it comes to value, the bang for the buck factor on this wax is excellent. For under $20, this is an excellent product to have on hand, especially if you like to use a sealant or coating as an underlying layer of protection. Optimum Car Wax is the perfect product to apply just after a wash to give your paint some added protection and some extra gloss in a matter of minutes.
