This is a thought that comes to mind when first witnessing the water behavior on a surface coated with Gtechniq’s EXO Ultra Durable Hybrid Coating version 2 (EXOv2). I have always been enamored with the original version of EXO. The amount of crystal like gloss it gave to a surface and its ability to keep a car cleaner for much longer than usual. When I found out that Gtechniq was developing and upgraded version, I could not wait to get some and try it out.
The original EXO came in an aerosol can. The application process was simple enough: perfect the surface, chemically strip the surface with Gtechniq Panel Wipe, use one microfiber to apply a thin layer of product and a second to remove excess product, then apply a second layer 30 minutes later. However, EXO required that the surface temperature of each body panel to be at least 68 degrees. This proved difficult in colder climates or on cold winter days. EXOv2 does away with this requirement.
Gtechniq EXO v2 New Look
EXO v2 is also no longer an aerosol and while I was skeptical at first, it allowed for an easier application. Using a high quality foam applicator only a few drops can cover large areas and even whole panels. The first coat went on in under 20 minutes and the second much faster than that. The amount of product used in application was also miniscule compared to other coatings like Gtechniq’s own C1 or 22ple VX1 Pro. Here is a picture comparing 1 coat of C1 vs. 2 coats of EXOv2 used on this particular car. (EXO on the left with the silver cap)
EXOv2 has a slew of improvements including more slickness, increased chemical resistance and greater hydrophobic properties. The water contact angle has been bumped from 110 degrees to 115. With most waxes, sealants or coatings water appears to simply slide off the surface, whereas with EXOv2 the water appears to be sprinting in fear from the surface. As if EXOv2 has issued a death threat to any water it comes in contact with. In fact, capturing some of the pictures and video clips seen here proved to be quite difficult. Keeping a healthy enough amount of water in one location for filming or photographing took a bit of finesse. Combine all of this with the fact that the production version will have even more hydrophobicity and you have a product that looks like a gun in a knife fight.

Professional detailers love products that are easy to use, produce consistent results and don’t require additional steps to use. Time is money in the world of professional auto detailing so you are always looking for products that produce quality results in less time. Menzerna FG400 Fast Gloss Compound is a product that can save time without sacrificing results. This holds especially true when you can compound and finish in 1 step on some paint with FG400! The Fast Gloss Compound is made without silicone or fillers so the results you see are what you get. The compound can be applied with a random orbital or rotary buffer while achieving outstanding results. This makes it not only great for professional use, but enthusiasts who enjoy detailing their car as well. Whether you use a Porter Cable, Griot’s Garage, Rupes, Flex or rotary buffer, you are more than capable of correcting imperfections with Fast Gloss.
One of the best features about Menzerna FG400 is the low dusting formula. Some compounds are notorious for leaving behind lots of dusting, which creates additional work after using the buffer. The fact that you don’t have compounding dust to clean up, saves you time, aggravation and ensures you don’t reintroduce imperfections when trying to remove the dust. This is a huge benefit to professional detailers. It seems with newer compounds and better buffers, the need for 3 or more correction steps is becoming less and less.
Detailers Domain also has another great car documented using FG400. This was a hit and run scuff on a Subaru BRZ. As Phil assessed the damage, he was unsure if polishing it would remove the scuff mark. The photos after show what FG400 was able to do with a microfiber cutting pad (left) and a more aggressive Surbuf pad (right) with the Rupes polisher.
Overall, I know Phil at Detailers Domain has been enjoying the Menzerna FG400 Fast Gloss Compound. He says the ability to one step a car is a huge time saver and is helping him profit more per detail.

Esoteric Auto Detail demonstrates using the Menzerna FG400 on a Rupes polisher and the outstanding results it produced on this Ferrari 458 Spider.
Read about just how bad this poor Ferrari 458 Spider came from the factory. Luckily for the owner, Esoteric Auto Detail was there to restore the paint to a condition worthy of being called new!
Travis Kent, owner of Dream Detail, shared a picture of what he was able to achieve using Menzerna FG400 and a Rupes buffer on this black Mustang.
Fan Richard Dunaway had the following to say about FG400:
It’s my go-to compound! I use a porter cable 5.5″ hydro tech pads this product is awesome finishes out so glossy for a compound most would be satisfied with how it finishes and not follow up. I figure good quality product does a great job but should be followed through and perfected with menzerna 4500. Mirror, depth and gloss that with those two paired up would be hard to beat…

After the Gtechniq C3 Smart Carnauba review, I decided to start a series of Gtechniq product reviews. So, the most logical place to start would be at the bottom of the coating line. Gtechniq C1.5 Silo (“see-low”) Seal is a versatile product that can coat nearly any surface with a layerable quartz based sealant. At first, I did not think much of Silo Seal. Gtechniq included it with the C1 coating as a sort of maintenance product. I figured I didn’t need it because I was using EXO on top of C1. However, Silo Seal is now getting a great detail of use away from C1 & EXO. With a durability of up to 6 months, it has become essential in my protection arsenal.

Have you ever used a new product and performed a double take… and then a triple take? A product that produced instant results that you just couldn’t believe? Gtechniq C3 is one of those products. When I first used Gtechniq C3 Smart Carnauba, I thought I had done something wrong. After a simple wipe on, wipe off I was seeing gloss beyond belief. Despite being discontinued by Gtechniq, this is still one of my favorite products. A few places may still have a small stock, so buy up what you can while you can!!
Not only does it produce some of the best gloss I have seen from any wax it also has a lot of other uses most waxes could never dream of. Gtechniq claims that Smart Carnauba will work on ‘dry, wet, cool & hot surfaces.’ Among these different surfaces are ‘bodywork, glass, trim, wheels, tires and interiors.’ Durability is another part of this product that is truly exceptional. On my personal truck I have seen durability exceed 3 months which is truly unheard of for almost any carnauba wax. Gtechniq C3 can also keep a vehicle cleaner longer than any other wax I know of. Even with living on an 1/8th mile gravel driveway, my truck will still look clean two to three weeks after a wash. Gtechniq even claimed that a detailing facility in Japan has switched from a very expensive wax to Gtechniq C3 due to its glossier appearance and ability to keep cars cleaner longer.
Don’t think that the benefits just stop with surface protection and appearance, Gtechniq C3 Read more…
Rupes Bigfoot polishers are sweeping the US and are changing the game for professional detailers. The past 2 – 3 years have shifted the mindset of professionals detailers, in that you don’t need to master a rotary buffer to achieve an award winning finish. Todd Cooperider called this back in 2011 with his article, Rotary Compounding – Is it dead? If you have used a Porter Cable 7424XP or Griot’s random orbital buffer paired up with Meguiar’s M105 compound and Surbuf and microfiber pads, you will know where I’m coming from. Put that same polish and pad combination on a Rupes Bigfoot polisher and you will not only achieve a better finish and correct more imperfections, but it will do it in less time!

Whether you are someone who washes their own cars or a professional detailer washing your customers’ vehicles, Grit Guard Bucket Inserts could be the single most important wash product you can purchase. A Grit Guard Bucket Insert helps remove contamination from your wash media as you rinse it off in a bucket of water. What does this do for your vehicles paint? It lowers the amount of dirt particles on your sponge or wash mitt and as a result, lessens the chance you have of adding swirl marks, scratches and marring to your paint. Ultimately, this means that your paint will have more gloss and depth because imperfections will not be dulling the surface from improper washing techniques.
How to use a Grit Guard Bucket Insert
The Grit Guard is designed to sit flush on the bottom of most 5 gallon buckets. Ideally you want the fins on the bottom side of the insert to touch the bottom of the bucket. Read more…
Blackfire Wet Diamond – All Finish Paint Protection is used by many professional detailers, and is regarded as one of the top synthetic sealants on the market today. When it comes to ease of use, durability, slickness of paint and a deep wet gloss, it is tough to beat Wet Diamond. One of the unique characteristics of this sealant is that it is boosted by Polycharger technology. This extends the durability of the Wet Diamond protection up to 6 months and increases slickness and shine. With how easy this product is to apply and remove an ounce or two is all that is needed to protect an entire mid-sized vehicle.
Blackfire Wet Diamond Sealant for Professional Detailers
One of the nicest characteristics of the Blackfire sealant is how easy it is to apply and remove. When it comes to adding your protective layers, one of the last things you want to happen is to struggle to apply or remove a product. After you have spent hours or days properly polishing and correcting the paint, you want to use a product that requires as little effort as possible. This helps minimize adding any swirls or marring to the finish. On lighter colored finishes, Blackfire Wet Diamond sealant is a terrific option as it produces a mirror like reflection. Also, customers absolutely love the slick finish it provides. Read more…
The appearance of a vehicle’s trim is what can really set apart a good detail from an amazing one. 22ple VR1 Plastic and Trim Restorer will ensure that your trim is properly restored, coated and protected for over a year! This is not a dressing. It will not wash off and it will not streak like lower quality trim restoration products on the market. 22ple VR1 coats trim surfaces with a glass-based barrier that helps protect them from harsh environmental elements.
What I like the most about the 22ple VR1 Plastic and Trim Restorer is how easy it is to work with. While this has been the only trim coating I’ve used, I was extremely impressed with the simple wipe on, wipe off technique. You can literally see the trim pieces absorb the product and transform right before your eyes. It’s also very easy to achieve a uniform finish on all trim, something that I feel is very important.

Optimum Opti-Bond Tire Gel is a water based dressing that is safe for your tires, wheel wells, trim pieces and any other exterior rubber and vinyl surfaces. Unlike many dressings that sit on top of the surface and can dry out and crack rubber and vinyl surfaces, this dressing gets absorbed into the surface you are applying it to. Sitting on top of rubber is what typically causes tire dressing sling, which is excess product that has found its way onto the areas behind your tires as you drive. When properly applied, Opti-Bond Tire Gel leaves behind as much or as little gloss as you like without any worry of tire dressing sling. Since this product is water based, you can dilute it 1:1 and still achieve outstanding results. For more shine, we recommend using this product at full strength, however additional shine can be achieved with each coat applied to the tire or surface.
From a Professionals Perspective
Optimum Opti-Bond Tire Gel may not be the end all tire dressing, but it’s a pretty good bang for your buck considering you can dilute it 1:1 with water. Personally, Read more…
22ple VX1 Signature Glass Coating is a new type of product for me, a coating. Before using VX1, I’ve only protected vehicles using a sealant or wax. 22ple has formulated a high silica-content product that creates a layer of glass protection on the paints surface. To demonstrate the effectiveness to me, Todd Cooperider handed me a foam applicator pad, previously used to apply the 22ple VX1 product. To my surprise, the foam pad felt stiff in my hand and you could understand how this product can potentially give you between 18 – 24 months of protection. I knew I had to get my hands on some and put it to the test.
VX1 comes boxed up in glass jars in either 20 ml, 30 ml or 50 ml sizes. Read more…
