If you have ever wondered how to spend money growing your business, one of the best things I could advise you on would be to attend the Esoteric Elite Detailer Academy at Studio 47 located in New Albany (Columbus), Ohio. The auto detailing training is put on by Todd Cooperider, owner and operator of Esoteric Detail and Esoteric Car Care. Todd is recognized as one of the top professional detailers in the United States and arguably in the world. If you are going to take notes from anyone, Todd Cooperider is the one!
Auto Detailing Training Overview
The academy is broken up into two full days. The morning of the first day was a classroom like experience. You’ll spend a little bit of time getting to know one another then dive right into some subject matter. If you are in the beginning stages of your auto detailing business, one of the most valuable things covered is understanding the various services Todd offers to clients, how he prices them and most importantly, what product and pad combinations he uses on various types of paint. Being able to properly pitch your services to potential customers is half the battle and knowing proven product combinations saves you a lot of time and money by taking the guesswork out of things. I know that I got a lot out of this part of the auto detailing training as did the students who attended the class with me.
The second half of the day was spent going over advanced polishing techniques. Todd thoroughly explained the importance of each step being covered then made sure each student in the class was able to properly perform what was being taught. Having a professional critique your polishing technique can be intimidating at first, especially in front of other detailers. However, as you implement Todd’s suggestions and you instantly see better results, you selfishly don’t want the buffer to leave your hands! Many techniques were taught that I felt would bring a good detailer to a great detailer and as we delve even deeper, perfecting these suggestions would take your from great to exceptional. By dinner time, I know I was anxious to put everything I learned into practice.
The second day of the auto detailing training was spent with more hands on training and one on one time with Todd. Even though the class was done in a group setting, you walk away feeling that you took a personal training class catered to your needs. Todd graciously answers any questions you may have on all aspects of detailing and running a successful business. I encourage all future attendees of the class to come prepared with questions and topics you feel you can benefit from. Also, be attentive in what other people in the class have to share, they can shed light on different topics or points of view. Some of my questions were triggered by what the other detailers said.
One of my favorite parts of the trip was getting to know the other detailers and continuing the auto detailing discussion around a good meal. Even though I shared less than 48 hours with the other class mates, I couldn’t help but feel like I knew them much longer. It must have been that we shared that same passion for detailing and the eagerness to push their detailing to new levels. Even though it’s been almost 5 months since I attended Todd’s class I am still in contact with 3 of the 4 other detailers who attended the October auto detailing training.
I encourage you to watch the video below that gives video testimonials by those who attended the class.

When it comes to promoting your business online, the main goal is usually to get in front of as many potential customers as possible. A great way to increase your reach and exposure is by using YouTube to host a video promoting your business. Before we get into how to promote your business on YouTube, lets first answer why you want to invest the time and money into doing this. The answer is quite simple, YouTube is the second largest search engine, only behind Google.
How to promote your business on YouTube
When trying to maximize the benefit of creating videos for YouTube, there are a few things that you want to make sure you do. One of the most important things is to make sure the video reflects the image you are trying to portray to your customers. Read more…
Being part of the high end automotive detailing industry and running a business in a major traffic area in Chicagoland tends to give me lots of exposure. A lot of that is great exposure as more and more caring enthusiasts find my information in local directories, both online and in print. On the other hand, this exposure also leads to many calls from local consumers who are simply shopping around for a detail job and might not be the ideal client for the services offered through my detailing business. That said, here is what I have found to be the best way of dealing with such clients and ensuring it’s done properly without leaving bad feelings between the two parties involved.
On one hand, I have been contacted by people who are completely new to proper car detailing, having only paid $5-10 for a car wash in the past, but they decided to come to my and have become regulars due to the quality of work provided. On the other hand, I’ve dealt quite a few times, too many if you ask me, with people who call me and ask for a price “for my cheapest buffing service”, then after I reply they say they can get it done elsewhere for much cheaper and hang up! Regardless, my strategy for dealing with new clients shopping around always stays the same.
Dealing with low price shoppers
That strategy consists of simply providing education on proper auto detailing. Read more…
It’s becoming more and more important for professional detailers to have a professional web presence. Doing so gives you an avenue to display your work and services to potential customers. This makes having a quality website for your auto detailing business an absolute must. You might think a professional website may cost a fortune or is hard to maintain, but they are far from it. With a quality content management system, such as WordPress, and the right website template, you can have a professional website at a very affordable cost.
Choosing an Auto Detailing Website Template
There are literally thousands of templates and themes to choose from when using WordPress. You’ll find an equal mix of free and premium templates to choose from. How do you know which one is right for you? We’ll touch on some of the most important factors to look for in a template so that you get the most out of your website.
Why I recommend a Premium Template
I would highly encourage you to purchase a premium website template for your auto detailing business. ThemeForest.net is probably the best place to find quality themes for WordPress sites. Read more…
One of the things that can have an instant impact on your local exposure is to take advantage of the many free listings out there. Most of the major search engines offer free business listings, including Google, Bing, and Yahoo. In addition to the major search engines, there are a slew of other websites that cater to listing your business for people to find, such as Yelp, Foursquare, and the Yellow Pages. One of the nice things about having your business listed in these types of sites is they usually rank high in search engines. This means as someone searches, car detailing in Chicago, usually some of the first results will belong to these listing sites. Read more…
One of the social media avenues that many professional detailers have yet to embrace is Google+ and there are plenty of benefits in doing so. I’d like to share with you two links that can thoroughly explain how Google+ works and why you want to use it for you and your business.
Here’s how I see it potentially impacting the auto detailing industry. If professional detailers collectively start using Google+ we can have an impact on what people find when searching Google for detailing related terms. The more detailers network together on Google+ and use it effectively, the bigger the impact it will have. It can help fine tune search results catered to professional detailers, helping weed out irrelevant content as we search Google. Doing so will help us discover new content from trusted professionals in your network or circles. The sharing of quality content can also help your Google+ profile rank higher giving more exposure to you and your business. Speaking of promoting your business, you can create a Google+ Page for your detailing business as well. This will allow you to promote your services on one page in conjunction with your personal Google profile. You’ll need the personal profile in order to establish your Google Authorship presence, which to me is one of the main reasons I started using Google+ in the first place. Read more…

Choosing a Business Based Domain Name
As a professional detailer, you want to think of your website as the hub of your online identity. Everything you do online should ultimately tie back to your website. Any type of print marketing, especially business cards, should always display your domain name as well. Choosing a domain name that accurately reflects your business is important.
Finding a great domain name that is not already taken can be a bit of a challenge at times. If your business is already in existence, most people prefer to have the domain match as closely as possible to your business name. I recommend using GoDaddy.com for all of your domain needs. They are the standard in the industry and their customer service has been great any time I needed it. GoDaddy offers a wide variety of products, however, I usually only use them for domain name purchases and SSL certificates. They offer affordable hosting if you are on a budget, however, going with a cheap host is not always a good thing and I’ll explain why in the hosting article. Read more…
Have you ever walked into a store just wanting to browse for something, only to have a salesman rush over to you and start pitching a product or service to you based on their assumption of your needs? If this has happened to you, my guess is more times than not, you probably leave the store without purchasing anything. Many times this can happen unintentionally, especially in a commission based environment, which is typically the type of pay structure most professional detailers fall into. A salesperson may get excited to talk to a potential customer and jumps right into their product offerings, pricing or sales pitch, without taking the time to get to know the potential client and see what their needs may be. Doing this can instantly diminish the small amount of trust someone has in you, hurting your chances of converting into a sale. One of the best things to do is to ask relevant questions in order to understand your customers needs, so you can cater your services and sales pitch specifically to them.
Why are you looking to have your vehicle detailed
This question will get right to the point and can help shape your sales approach greatly. Read more…
