22PLE VM1 Wheel Treatment – McLaren MP4-12C – Mike Cardenas
The McLaren MP4-12C is a vehicle designed to go fast, but also designed to stop just as quickly. This phenomenal stopping power comes with one drawback, brake dust. Mike Cardenas of SweetCars was called by a special client to help with this dilemma on his McLaren MP4-12C. The owner of the McLaren is an avid detail enthusiast and had heard about the benefits of 22PLE VM1 on wheels and calipers. He knew that this product would greatly help with cleaning and maintenance of the wheels and calipers of his MP4-12C. The client also knew that he could trust me with safe removal and installation of the wheels without any harm ever coming to vehicle. After all, the vehicle was brought in to look great and not the other way around!
22PLE VM1 Wheel Treatment
After properly washing the McLaren, I set out to start on the wheels. We began by jacking up the vehicle and carefully removing the wheels one by one. McLaren clearly labeled it’s jack points on the underside of the MP4-12C, so lifting was safe and easy.
Once removed each wheel was cleaned and paint clay was used to safely remove remaining contaminants. This left a smooth clean surface and was ready for the next step which was polishing. I used a Heavy-Duty Metal Polish from Griot’s Garage to polish the wheels and clean the wheels one step further, ensuring a clean wheel. The wheels were then prepped with an IPA 50/50 wipedown before applying 22PLE VM1. This mix of 50% Isopropyl Alcohol and 50% distilled water, would clean all remaining oils from the polish and leave an ideal surface for the 22PLE to properly bond to.
22PLE VM1 was then applied and after 3 to 5 minutes was buffed with Microfiber and allowed to sit while the brake calipers were meticulously cleaned and prepped for 22ple VM1. With the wheels removed, this made it possible to easily access the suspension components which were also detailed using Meguiar’s All-Purpose Cleaner and Chemical Guys Black on Black.
With the wheels now completed, they were ready to be mounted. 22PLE VM1 would now offer this McLaren a protective layer that resists up to 700 degrees and make the wheels and brake calipers easier to clean and maintain. It would also enhance the gloss and metallic in the wheel paint, making it look fantastic! After a few spirited drives in the McLaren, the owner enjoyed the ease of cleaning of the wheels without the hassle of commonly found with cleaning brake dust.
McLaren MP4-12C Paint Correction Detail
The vehicle had been meticulously detailed at McLaren before leaving it’s home in Surrey, England. But things happen, and the McLaren had some areas that needed correction and polishing while in SweetCar’s care. I found the clear coat on the McLaren to be on the softer side. He used Meguiar’s MF Cutting pads with Megs D300 Correction Compound to remove some minor swirls and scratches while using the Griot’s DA. He then used the Flex VRG with a black Lake Country pad with Sonax Perfect Finish to jewel the paint. A coat of Swissvax Mirage would then be used to finalize the look of the McLaren.
